Are You Unique?

“you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:13-14).

A few weeks ago, I promised to give you 7 things you need to know and be able to answer to leave a God filled Legacy to your children. This is the third.:

Am I Unique?

There are billions of people on the planet today and you are the only one with your fingerprints and DNA structure. Furthermore, if the DNA strands from your body were stretched out in sequence, they would reach to the sun and back (93 million miles) 400 times!! Hmm, we were created with a big bang? Each one of us is so unique that to think creation was random is so humorous that it borders on insanity.

Allow me to reinforce our uniqueness and the love that God has for each one of us. Greg Boyle was a priest in LA in the middle of the gangs for the past 30 years. This story is his. I will summarize.

Rigo is 15 years old and in a detention center. His father was a heroin addict and was never in his life other than to beat him at regular intervals. He tells the story when he was in fourth grade and being sent home mid-day. His father greets him and then beats him…with a pipe.

When talking about his mother he says, “There is no one like her.” He explains that she visits him in detention every Sunday. “You know how many buses she takes ever Sunday—to see my sorry ass?

He begins sobbing uncontrollably. It takes him time to reclaim breath and an ability to speak. Then he does, gasping through his tears. “Seven buses. She takes …seven…buses. Imagine.

Why this story? Imagine the expansive heart for each one of us. God’s desire for and pursuit of us is way beyond what we could ever imagine. He takes seven buses, just to arrive at us. We settle for less intimacy with God even though he is relentless pursuing our love despite our actions.

Greg says, “It is precisely because we have such an overactive disapproval gland ourselves that we tend to create God in our own image. It is truly hard for us to see the truth that disapproval does not seem to be part of God’s DNA. God is just too busy loving us to have any time left for disappointments.

What is even more amazing was Jesus, over 2000 years ago, wanted YOU to know that God the Father wants to love you just like He loves the Son! He prayed to God the Father, “ let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” (John 17:23)

Are you unique? In your eyes, maybe not. But would you deny the Father’s love? Do you deny how unique he has made you? Would you deny what Jesus said about you? He wants to love you the way He loves Jesus. Now that is truly amazing! Pray for God’s grace to better understand how he has made you unique. Pray that he will open your eyes to your true purpose in life. If you are still alive, you have a purpose. Pray that God helps you reveal this uniqueness to your children. They need the reassurance.
