A Legacy Of Empty Christianity Is A Legacy Of Empty Promises (Part 3)

Do you find yourself not content to see others used by the Holy Spirit and you want the full power of God’s grace? I  want to help! In the last two installments (part 1 and part 2), I told you a story of one who seeks the Spirit and I gave you the four steps in receiving and retaining the Holy Spirit namely: I must ask, I must receive by faith, I must give of myself, and I must obey. I give credit to E. Stanley Jones for the material with my own personal experience.

Today I want to help you understand those four steps.

In asking for the Holy Spirit, Jesus tells us that we should ask, seek and knock. There is merely a door between you and entering into what Jesus wants for you in giving you the Spirit. Christ is that door. He is the means of entrance so it is not a barrier.

I am entering based on faith. Jesus says the Spirit is a gift to us as children of God. I do not ask for evidence; I believe because Jesus said so. “The one who calls you is faithful and will do this” (1 Thess. 5:24). It is what God has promised to do that I trust. I have friends that do not believe me when I say that God answers all my prayers within 24 hours. He may not give me what I want, but I know what His answer is in one day. That seems remarkable to even me.

I think, the reason I get an answer so quickly is that I look to everything for signs of His answer. Whether it is a book I am reading or the Bible verses I read daily or something I am listening to on the radio or merely a street sign or someone cutting me off on the highway. I look to everything as a possible symbol of His answer to me.

True story… About four years ago I had a urge to buy a motorcycle. I had good friends who had motorcycles and my brother has had one for years. In college, I had a small motorcycle. I thought it would be a fun way to spend some time with family and friends. So I asked God to give me a sign whether it was A ok. Within 24 hours, I was on a phone call with a client who had been riding motorcycles for 40 years who had a good friend in Florida (also a client) who had been riding just as long. He immediately asked me if I had heard the news. I said, “heard what?” He said that his friend in Florida had been in a horrible motor cycle accident…

I knew his words were words from God. I didn’t buy the motorcycle.

I am giving up any power or control of self. My faith in Jesus taking care of me and protecting me is strong enough to bear what even Job had to bear. “Now the confidence we have in him is this, that he listens to us whenever we ask anything in accordance with his will; and if we know that he listens to whatever we ask, we know that we obtain the requests we have made to him” (1 John 5:14-15).

My confidence in Jesus is that He hears me and will respond. So it starts with confidence, then asking Him and then trusting His will for us. By faith I am communicating through His Spirit daily. By trust in His promises, I am believing in His protection and good will.

Lord I am receiving into every fiber of my being your Spirit as the controller of my life and destiny. I trust your will for my joy and my happiness. Use me to serve your Kingdom.
