Marriage as an Eternal Legacy

Last week I explained some of the differences between Legacy Planning and Estate Planning. Let’s go a little deeper. How does Legacy Planning impact our marriages? You might not like to hear that your marriage has something to do with your Legacy. A Legacy is what you leave behind and marriage is one of the key components in God’s plan for eternity. Let’s pose a question:

WHAT IF PLANNING YOUR LEGACY WAS MORE ABOUT ETERNITY THAN IT WAS ABOUT THE HERE AND NOW?

In Acts 17, we are told that God has set eternity in our hearts. So how does loving our mates have anything to do with eternity? For some of you, the thought of living with your spouse for eternity is not a pleasant thought. If that’s the case, stick with me.

I believe God’s message to us is to give up our pride, our glory, our kingdom, our righteousness and our strength. We are to replace it with His righteousness, kingdom, glory and strength. In addition, we are to allow His life to flow through us. In other words, we need to humble ourselves to living in complete dependence on Jesus as He was on the father.

WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SAY MAY SEEM STRANGE, BUT ONE OF THE SURE SIGNS OF ONENESS IN MARRIAGE IS OUR ABILITY TO MAKE EACH OTHER MISERABLE.

When we think about other couples, their misery is not ours. That is, their mates do not make us unhappy. Why? We are not one with them. Oneness is a term the Bible uses to explain the body of Christ, our relationship with Jesus, His relationship with the father, and, of course, marriage.

When we marry, God turns on the divine mixer and blends the couple together. Marriage should be the death of individuality. If we are to live for eternity now, we need our marriage to be just one example of the union of us with Jesus and the submission to His will and direction.

Remember the story of Job? Satan asked God to destroy Job. God allowed Satan to proceed with the one condition that he could not take him. Satan subsequently took Job’s flocks, children, servants, crops, wealth, and even his health. There was one thing that Satan did not take: his wife! Why not? Because even Satan knew that a man’s wife is his very life, and he had been commanded not to take the life of Job. The wife was safe.

The eternal legacy that is in marriage requires agape love. Agape love is selfless love of another. Marriage, with all of its distractions, hurts, pains and hardships, should be all about selfless love.  There is absolutely no better example of selfless love in the world today. Our joy is made full in our obedience to our Father through following His Son’s example on the cross: sacrificial love. What impact will that kind of love have on future generations? Can you see that your sacrifices today to give without thought of self are how Jesus demonstrated His type of love now and for eternity? That should make you smile!
